Background of the Study
Childhood obesity is an emerging public health crisis with long-term implications for health and well-being. In Niger State, increasing rates of childhood obesity have been observed, and parental influence plays a pivotal role in shaping children's dietary behaviors and lifestyle choices. Parental attitudes, feeding practices, and lifestyle habits significantly affect the risk of obesity in children (Ibrahim, 2024; Adeyemi, 2023). Parents serve as role models and primary decision-makers regarding food choices and physical activity, and their influence is particularly pronounced during early childhood.
In Niger State, socio-economic transitions, urbanization, and changing family dynamics have altered traditional feeding practices. The increasing availability of processed and fast foods, coupled with a decline in physical activity, has contributed to an obesogenic environment. Parental behaviors—such as excessive screen time, unhealthy snacking habits, and low levels of physical activity—can predispose children to obesity. Furthermore, cultural perceptions about body weight and health may either encourage or discourage healthy behaviors. Recent research highlights that children whose parents exhibit unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyles are more likely to become obese (Chukwu, 2024).
This study aims to investigate the prevalence of childhood obesity in Niger State and examine the extent to which parental influence contributes to this trend. It will explore the relationship between parental knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors and the nutritional status of their children. By integrating quantitative data from health assessments with qualitative insights from parental interviews, the research seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role of parental influence in childhood obesity. The findings are expected to inform interventions that target family-level behavior change to prevent and manage childhood obesity in Niger State.
Statement of the Problem
In Niger State, childhood obesity is on the rise, posing a significant challenge to public health. Parental influence is a critical determinant of children’s eating habits and physical activity levels, yet many parents lack the necessary knowledge and resources to promote healthy behaviors. The shift towards urban lifestyles, combined with the increased availability of unhealthy food options, has contributed to an obesogenic environment where children are at heightened risk of developing obesity (Lawal, 2023).
The lack of awareness among parents about the long-term health implications of obesity, along with cultural factors that may favor higher body weight as a sign of prosperity, further complicates efforts to combat childhood obesity. These challenges are compounded by inadequate nutritional education and limited access to healthy food options, particularly in low-income families. The persistent gap in effective parental guidance contributes to the continued prevalence of obesity among children in Niger State, leading to adverse health outcomes and increased healthcare costs.
There is an urgent need to investigate the role of parental influence in childhood obesity within this context. Understanding the specific behaviors, attitudes, and socio-cultural factors that contribute to obesity in children is critical for developing targeted interventions that promote healthier lifestyles. This study seeks to fill the existing knowledge gap by exploring the dynamics of parental influence on childhood obesity in Niger State, thereby providing a foundation for comprehensive family-centered interventions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on households in urban and rural areas of Niger State. Data will be collected via anthropometric measurements, surveys, and parental interviews. Limitations include potential self-report bias and the challenge of controlling for external influences on children’s behavior.
